JNDS Quotables #8 – Dr. Eric Thomas

How often have you been disappointed in your performance? Whether it be a design, interview, business deal, life, or anything?

Well you are not alone. Not by a long shot.

I remember recently I was contracted to do some design collateral for a big client. I was excited. I saw their vision in very few words, and already had the design in my mind. I was so in tuned with the client, I had the sketches rendered within an hour after the meeting. But as soon as I went to create the render for review, it wasn’t coming out as I had planned.

I mean I had it sketched out perfectly, but it just wasn’t communicating. So I sketched and rendered, and rendered–becoming more and more frustrated and disappointed. The milestone deadline was quickly approaching and I had nothing to show.

Panicking! Was going to ask for an extension, but then something hit me. RELAX! Step away and clear your head.

Listen to some podcasts, exercised, and came across a quote that made sense through it all.

So instead of giving up and falling victim to being disappointed, I started looking at the idea from a different perspective. Approached the sketch and render differently. Stayed within my idea but kept tweaking it. Before I knew it, the render was becoming clearer. Didn’t get much sleep, but didn’t let my mind get defeated either. Submitted the render, the client accepted, and continue to provide quality results till this day!

Never be defeated by disappointment, accept it and push through it.
